El Grande is set in 15th century Spain, at the end of the Reconquista. The players send out their caballeros to gain control over the 9 regions and become “El Grande”. However, everything depends on the location of the king - and majorities may shift in the blink of an eye.

Players take turns depending on which power card they play. Each turn, players choose 1 of 5 action cards, allowing them to place caballeros on the map and perform a special action. After 3 rounds, they gain points depending on the majorities in the different regions - and extra points for the majority in the current “kingdom” and their home region. After 9 rounds total, somebody will be the new ruler of medieval Spain.

  • ENGAGE IN MEDIEVAL INTRIGUE: Set in 15th century Spain, El Grande is a classic area control game where players compete to become the ruler of the land.
  • DYNAMIC GAMEPLAY: Majorities in regions can shift rapidly based on the location of the king, offering strategic depth and excitement in every round.
  • CHOOSE YOUR ACTIONS: Each turn, use power cards to select from 5 action cards, allowing you to place caballeros strategically and perform special actions.
  • CLASSIC REBORN: El Grande, the 1996 Game of the Year, is back with a fresh overhaul, making it more captivating than ever.
  • BONUS EXPANSIONS: This edition includes two new mini expansions not found in the original version, adding even more excitement to the game.

Newcomer to an age-old game

I heard El Grande was an incredible influence on all area majority games and I can see why. The game is very simple to play in terms of mechanics but has loads of depth and tension, especially at higher player counts. I'm happy that I got this newer version of the game with all the quality of life of improvements at a reasonable price. I look forward to teaching this game to more players, especially those who aren't into heavier board games.
